What Makes A Successful Greater China Tax Manager?

One of the most unique challenges an organization may face is the establishment of a tax department in the Greater China region.

US multinationals are venturing into new territory in developing competitive incentive pay plans for tax professionals with the skills needed to be successful in the region. For this reason, it is important to understand what skills are necessary to excel in this role. US multinational corporations will have the most success in establishing the Greater China Tax Manager function if they select individuals with the following characteristics:

  • A strong sense of belonging to the Chinese culture
  • A solid technical foundation in both US and China taxes
  • The ability to lead the process of issue identification, research, and implementation of planning initiatives
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills in both Chinese and English
  • The ability to develop and cultivate strong ties and relationships with the Chinese government, State Administration of Taxation, and other local tax authorities in China
  • A “hands-on” individual with the highest level of integrity and a strong sense of personal responsibility
  • The ability to operate autonomously and effectively for their US multinational employer
  • The ability to effectively manage diverse functions and activities

Each of these vital characteristics plays an important role in the Greater China Tax Manager’s ability to succeed in the region.
