LESSONS OF LEADERS IN THE TAX COMMUNITY |
| |
The greatest challenge you may face in your tax career is the development of your management and leadership skills. Vince Lombardi stated, "Leaders are not born, they are made; and they are made just like anything else, through hard work." The continued improvement of your leadership skills are important in the development of your tax career. Leadership is an art form that develops over time and with experience. Having said that, we are fortunate to have the opportunity to observe many leaders in the tax profession and share with you what we have learned about them. We have identified the following traits and characteristics in the tax leaders we have encountered. |
| |
Vision : These leaders have a vision and an ongoing mission. They have figured out the best way to communicate this vision to the people around them and motivate them towards these goals. People enjoy working towards this vision because they are made to feel part of the mission.
Integrity : These leaders have integrity which is the cornerstone of their success. They continually reinforce this integrity in their environment by the high standards they set for themselves and those around them. Their reputations are defined by the strength of their words and the trust they instill in the people around them.
Optimistic : These leaders remain forever optimistic despite any challenges they may encounter. They lead through their optimistic view of everything around them. Their optimism drives people around them to do better.
Motivated : These leaders know the best motivation is self-motivation. They are motivated to do whatever it takes to get the job done!
Determination and Persistence : No matter what challenges these leaders face, they believe there must be a way. If one plan is not working, they figure out another way to meet these challenges.
Best Themselves : These leaders want to best themselves by doing the work better each and every time. They are never satisfied with what they have done; and they are driven by what they believe they can do!
Connected to People : These leaders have figured out a way to stay connected to people around them, despite the fact that they have less time and more responsibilities.
Reliability : These leaders value their reliability and have built their reputations based upon hard work over a long period of time. You can always rely upon them to do what they tell you they will do! |

| Leaders
in the Tax Profession "The Dynamic
Duo" |
|
We
have identified two lawyers with one
of the world's largest law firms, DLA
Piper Rudnick Gray Cary because they
are recognized nationally and internationally
as Tax Partners with competencies in
Transfer Pricing, International and
Domestic Tax Structuring and Defense.
We are profiling them as the "Dynamic
Duo" at their firm because we know
there are few tax professionals with
their career track.
Both Brian Andreoli and Eric Ryan have
lead tax departments at multinational
corporations; Eric Ryan was Tax Director
at Apple Computer and Brian Andreoli
was Tax Director at Boehringer Ingelheim
Pharmaceuticals. In addition, these
gentlemen have impressive track records
in a Big Four public accounting environment.
Eric Ryan was a Tax Partner with PWC
and Brian Andeoli was a Tax Principal
at EY.
Their academic credentials are also
notable. Eric Ryan earned his BS, JD
and CPA. Brian Andreoli earned his BS,
MBA, JD, LLM and CPA. Between the two
of them, they have been admitted to
the State Bars in California, Connecticut,
Massachusetts, New York and Washington
DC; as well as the Supreme Court and
the U.S. Tax Court.
Eric Ryan was responsible for receiving
the world's first Bilateral Advanced
Pricing Agreement (U.S. - Australia)
and has completed several other APAs
with the IRS. Brian Andreoli has successfully
defended numerous multinational clients
on sophiscated tax structuring and audit
defense issues.
The type of experience the "Dynamic
Duo" has acquired in these three
separate business environments is invaluable
to their multinational clients. More
than anyone, they understand the challenges
and responsibilities of running a tax
department in today's complex business
environment.
We would like to thank Brian Andreoli
and Eric Ryan for the opportunity to
profile them in this issue. |
